The term ‘anaphylaxis’ was coined by Richet and Portier over 100 years ago while investigating the rapid onset of extreme respiratory distress, vomiting and diarrhoea, and cardiovascular collapse in dogs injected with repeated sublethal doses of a toxin from jellyfish.
Reports were soon published detailing similar phenomena in man resulting from allergic reactions to food, insect stings and antisera administration.
